About the Swedish Weaving Council
The Swedish Weaving Council was formed as a non-profit association in spring 1987. Its task is to bring together different players in the sphere of weaving: businesses, organizations, schools, colleges and institutions. Representatives from the weaving sector in general are elected as board members.
Purpose and objectives
The purpose and objectives of the Swedish Weaving Council are to develop weave, preserve tradition, monitor the teaching of weave and bring attention to Swedish handweaving by arranging conferences, fairs and weave competitions. The Swedish Weaving Council also plays an important role in serving as a referral and consultation body for issues pertaining to further and higher education and courses within the field of weaving.
A council for weaving
The idea of creating a council specifically for weaving in Sweden hatched out at a textile fair in Germany held at the beginning of the 1980s, where several Swedish companies in the weaving sector had presented themselves collectively.
The first Handweaving Fair
Some 25 businesses attended the initial meeting in Stockholm with the National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies (SHR), Friends of Handicraft (HV) and the National Association of Weaving Teachers (VLR). Responses were very positive: a weaving conference and fair then took place in Halmstad 1986 and were much appreciated.
The 16th Handweaving Fair
The Swedish Weaving Council arranges a triennial conference and handweaving fair, held at a different location in Sweden on each occasion. The 16th Handweaving Fair will take place September 25-27, 2025 in Gävle at Monitor ERP Arena.
